The purpose of washing clothes is to make what was once dirty, clean. And if you really look at it, baptism is the same way. We were covered in sin, but the blood of Jesus Christ washed away that dirt and made us clean.
However, just because baptism has taken place that doesn't give us free reign to go and do whatever we want and not think twice about it.
Look at it this way.
When our clothes are in the process of being washed, we don't just stop them in the middle of the rinse cycle because they had already been washed a previous time. We let them continue because we want them to be fully clean and reusable once more.
Repentance works the same way.
Just because we were already baptized doesn't mean we can continue to walk around covered in filthy sin, we have to repent and turn away from what made us dirty so God can be able to use us again.
Just like washing clothes is a repetitive, continuous cycle we go through when we want our clothes to be clean again, repentance is a repetitive, continuous cycle we go through when we mess up and want to be made clean again.
We wouldn't walk around wearing dirty clothes, so why walk around covered in sin?
